How to Add Gutters to Your Reno Home: A 2026 Guide

Adding gutters to a home without them can transform how your property handles Nevada's weather. Many Reno homeowners discover their house lacks adequate drainage until water damage appears.

Do you actually need gutters in Reno?

Reno gets 7-8 inches of rain per year — significantly less than much of the country. Some homebuilders historically argued that gutters were optional here because of the low rainfall. That argument ignores the reality of our climate.

What makes gutters essential in Reno:

Monsoon season — July and August dump 1-3 inches of rain in 30-minute bursts. Without gutters, that water hammers foundations and erodes landscaping.

Sierra snowmelt — even a dusting of snow on your roof melts into significant water. Gutters manage it.

Topsoil — much of Reno sits on caliche and poor-draining soil. Water pooling at the foundation doesn't drain quickly and causes serious damage.

If your home currently has no gutters and you've noticed foundation cracks, basement moisture, landscape erosion, or exterior siding damage — gutters will solve it.

The process of adding gutters to an existing home

Adding gutters to a home that's never had them involves:

Inspection of the fascia board — if there's no fascia or the fascia is rotted/damaged, that needs to be addressed before gutters can be attached.

Drip edge installation — older homes without gutters often lack a drip edge flashing. This must be installed under the roof shingles before the gutter goes on.

Downspout routing planning — deciding where downspouts land, how they connect to drainage, and whether any underground tie-ins are needed.

Landscaping considerations — planning splash blocks, extensions, or underground drain tie-ins to move water away from the foundation without tearing up existing landscape.

What it costs to add gutters to a gutter-less home

For a typical Reno single-family home that's never had gutters:

Basic aluminum system — 180 feet seamless, 4 downspouts, new drip edge: $2,400-3,200.

Premium aluminum with leaf guards — same footage, add micro-mesh: $3,400-4,500.

Copper system — same footage in copper: $6,500-9,800.

Most homes can be completed in one full day. Unusual rooflines or fascia repair work can push it to two days.

Common Reno home styles and gutter needs

Different home types need different approaches:

Ranch-style homes (1960s-1980s) — often originally built without gutters. Straightforward retrofit; 5" or 6" K-style aluminum. Typical roofline 150-200 ft.

Mid-century moderns in Old Southwest Reno — architecturally sensitive. Often half-round copper for historic integrity.

Newer builds in Damonte Ranch / South Meadows — came with gutters originally, but some tract homes got undersized 5" systems that benefit from 6" upgrade.

Mountain custom homes (Galena, Montrêux, Saddlehorn) — complex rooflines, significant snow load. Heavy-gauge 6" minimum; copper common.
